The island of Madeira is lapped by the waters of the Gulf Stream with warm comfortable summers and mild winters that make it an enchanting destination all year round. It is located in the Atlantic in the same parallel of Casablanca. It can be accessed by plane by the international airport of Funchal.
It takes around 1hr 30 min to fly from Madeira to any of the Portuguese airports and a little over two hours to get to airports in the centre of Europe. Flights to Porto Santo take 15 minutes. The airport is about 16 km, a 15 minute ride, from Funchal. TRADITIONS AND ENCHANTING VALLEYS
CÂMARA DE LOBOS/ EIRA DO SERRADO / MONTE
(Tuesday, 9th)
Câmara de Lobos - Typical fishing town where we stop to visit a
private wine cellar to taste the various Madeira Wines (except on holidays).
Pico dos Barcelos - Viewpoint from where you can admire a beautiful view over
Funchal.
Eira do Serrado - Viewpoint (1094m) overlooking the valley of Curral das Freiras a little village built in the middle of a valey. Breathtaking views over the village and mountains.
Monte - Village in the suburbs of Funchal. Visit the Parish church. The famous sledge ride - toboggan - can be made until Livramento. Or you can take the cable car down to the city centre (this is optional and not included in price). If you choose to go down by cable car, the return to the hotel is not included.
OLD TOWN
(Wednesday, 10th)
Old Town (Zona Velha) – Narrow, cobbled lanes, old buildings, renovated fishermen's cottages, pavement restaurants, and art and craft shops.
Santiago Fort - Located above the seafront in the old part of town, this city fort was built to defend the port of Funchal from pirate attacks. Today, it houses the Museum of Modern Art and a pleasant restaurant overlooking the sea.
“Madeira Story Centre” (optional) –This Centre gives an overview of 14 million years of the history of Madeira in a visit lasting around 1½ hours. The Centre has other facilities like a multi-purpose panoramic terrace, a theme café decorated with scenes from the history of Madeira, and an exclusive souvenir shop.
A DAY IN A GOLDEN ISLAND
PORTO SANTO
(Friday, 12th)
Come and discover a golden island, with 9 km of a fine yelow sandy beach surrounded by turquoise blue water, where the sun shines and tranquillity reigns.
Included in this package:
- Return transfers from Hotel/Harbor/Hotel in Funchal. (time to be confirmed on purchase);
- Return boat trip to the island of Porto Santo;
